Human rights in long-term care needs an interdisciplinary and inclusive perspective, with the voices of people drawing on care in the middle. On May 16th 2023 world-leading medical journal ‘The Lancet’ announced a new Commission of academic experts that will be focusing on a human rights approach to tackle worldwide concerns over long-term care provision for older people.
What is new and exciting about this Commission?
The formation of the new Commission highlightes the growing momentum interest in human rights within the field of health and social care and the human rights of older people more broadly.
The interdisciplinary team of Commissioners shows how this is a cross cutting topic, not just a legal one.
Most importantly, it puts people drawing on long term care at the heart of its work, which will hopefully mean that outputs will be informed by priorities set for example by care home residents, people receiving care at home, people living with dementia.
